T Rowe Price

A few of you may recognize my name.  I posted actively on HO for several years but moved 18 months ago & focussed on getting other things in order.

My wife has some $$$ in an IRA with a previous employer, that is just in a bank acct.  We're not worried about that bank's solvency as they were very conservative in their loans.  However, I want to transfer it to a place where we can invest some of it.  I've been looking at T Rowe Price & am impressed with it.  It has numerous good funds, with below ave exp ratios.  I do not recall TRP being slammed during the fund scandals 4-5 yrs ago.  & yes, we would roll it over into an IRA at TRP; no taxes.

My question: What do u think of TRP?  We also have accts at TD Ameritrade & a broker who uses Amer funds (doesn't charge us any fees).  But I like the diversity TRP offers.  We are 48 yrs old with 15-17 yrs to retirement with moderate risk tolerance.  I am not terribly concerned about the current mkt troubles, as we have time for our retirement accts to bounce back & grow in value.  What do u think of TRP?

Hi Randall, yes I recognize your name. I also posted here sometimes but not really lately. I got very negative on the market long ago and redeemed my last TRP fund last October. FWIW, I would highly recommend TRP. I used to post on the TRP forum also, There are some knowledgeable people and you should be able to seperate them from the "know-it-alls" easily. But it is a very friendly forum.

There was only one thing I was becoming concerned about and if they are having redemptions like I think they may be having it should not become a problem at least for the forseeable future. It had to do with them having so many "funds-of-funds" through their growing Retirement Series in addition to their Spectrum Funds.  And also indirectly through their Personal Strategy Series.

You are correct that they were not involved in any of the wrongdoings a while back and their customer service is better than Vanguard or Fido IMO. Their website sucks! But they may have improved it since I last visited.

Best of luck whatever you decide.

Regards,

Sandy

Hi Sandy, yes, I knew about the TRP forum, but thot I'd get some neutral replies here in HO, & I'm still a little partial to HO.  I guess I figured that everyone at TRP forum already likes TRP, but I suppose they could also warn me about its shortcomings too.

Any other comments, pro or con, on TRP?

I had a TRP account for several years and would agree that their service was always very helpful and professional (pre-internet days).

Even when I closed the account to consolidate and simplify, they took my telephone cancellation request professionally.  I was impressed by this as my previous experience canceling bank or brokerage accounts was met by questions and some resistance.  (not wanting to give back the money easily)

In my opinion it is a very good organization.

Hi Randall,

I'm new to the forum, but I've done two 401k rollovers into TRP.  The first was 5 yr's ago when I established the IRA with them.  The second was 6 mo's ago.  I've been very happy with them and like the funds they have.

I think the health fund is well positioned to take advantage of some interesting opportunities as a result of drug pipelines at "big pharma".  However, this is relatively high risk and may not fit with your goals.

Hi again Randall,

I didn't have time earlier, but FWIW, I did a search and found one of the threads discussing possible probs with too many fof's.

http://socialize.morningstar.com/NewSocialize/forums/1/204014/ShowThread.aspx

If the link doesn't work, I think if you put the post # 204014 in the search box it will bring it up. I wrote this post 7/29/07, but it seems to me I wrote it longer ago than that.

Regards,

Sandy

Sandy, your link worked & thanks for the warning re fof's.  So the problem, as I understand it is asset bloat.  Thus, another fund family becoming a victim of their own success, altho it's limited # of its funds.  I realize that I still need to be careful in choosing specific funds.  Seems like every family has their strengths & weaknesses.  I'll keep this in mind as I look further.

imo? Nope

Why?  I think they've  Gotten to big for their britches.

And if you and your wife are making and saving "more than enough" to fund your retirement? ( like+10% or more? ) why take more risks?

Be a Football team..>In most cases,  "A Good Defense, Beats the Best Offense"

and just Set up a Port of :

A. Index Funds and make sure it's no more than 40/'60 mix..at most..( Like VWINX or VWELX ) with Bond Funds like VFITX,VUSTX to get that mix..

Or? B.  a Group of Balanced Funds ( not PRWCX either) and add enough Treasury Bond funds to the mix to have that 40/60 mix..

Why Not PRWCX? (a) Changed Mgrs last yr (b) Didn't stick to their Game plan..

Why 40/60?  the one I track has outperformed for the past 10 yrs and is today..vs any Higher mixes in Equities..( and stay out of  Large caps & Int'ls )  and I always Look at a Funds Performance in the last Bear Yrs first..ie; Always buy Co.'s thatt do well in a Bear market, anyone can do well in a Bull "

And if you Still want to "try your luck"? Only use 10% of your money elsewhere..

and if your NOT saving enough to do the above?

A. Try to sit down and find out what you can cut in expenses First

B. Get a Better paying job or A Part-Time Job/Self Employed Business going..

C.And  Not go after Higher Rtn/Higher Risk Investments..to make up for your shortcommings or Higher cost Lifestyle..

D. Own some Good Stocks, like WMT, BAX, Berkshire B and a few others..

E. Learn about the Newer Short Funds...(that not many talked about in the past yr..and kept it to themselves..)

That's what I had to accept and do.. after buring myself for yrs trying to get rich in the markets...so I could spend everything else I made..on "the Good Life'...

And Got your home paid for Yet? Do that First and Foremost..

Warning! > DYOR!..DoYourOwnResearch.. Don't invest just on my or anyone else's opinions! I'm just a 60 yr old retired Limo Business guy that is guessing like everyone else and I have just been lucky these past 8 yrs since being in these funds with my Retirement $ with ave. a 13.5% apy. I compare my choices to Index Ports of VWELX, VWINX and other Index Ports by Pro's, like Fund Advice/PaulMerriman @ FundAdvice.com - Home , PAUL B. FARRELL's @ Lazy Portfolio's ,  Scott Burns @ AssetBuilder Inc. - Retirement Investment Advisor , Annex Wealth Management along with using  Lipper Funds Research | SmartMoney.com  &  Bal. Fund Compare (Fund Compare) | SmartMoney.com ,&  Bob Brinker's Land of Critical Mass :plus a Dozen  other Pro's & Investment Firms too and it's  STILL a Guessing game.! Thus I accepted my Limitations and put *80% of my $ into BF's (Balanced Funds ) of FPACX,OAKBX,PRPFX & WMRIX and just let them decide for me, since they have proven to do a better job of it  than I ever have before and Since.   Maybe you will do better, butt I doubt it.. Why? " The Odds R Against you"   Read this> 11 reasons passive investors let Wall Street steal their money - MarketWatch    &  Amazon.com: The Brainwashing of the American Investor: The book that Wall Street does not want you to read!: Steven R. Seleng.. My Name is Dennis @ DKP50@aol.com Supporting The ADA and JDRF Assoc. for diabetes for a cure and I am always open to suggestions to Improve my Investing methods, but not my Opinions..  LOL

"Be a Football team..>In most cases,  "A Good Defense, Beats the Best Offense"

Not true - the best teams are good - excellent at BOTH.

If I was 60, a 40/60 mix would be good too.  But we're 48 w/ moderate risk tolerance & 14-17 yrs to retirement.  & no, I'm not trying to get rich.  Our current port is about 20/80.  So adding maybe 25-35% to equity funds is not going out on a limb for us.

You do have a good pt about prwcx, as recent performance has suffered.

Any other opinions about TRP?  or specific TRP funds?
