Very impressive today - down only 1.42% with so much carnage around the market.

Hats off to Mr. McGregor and Mr. Studzinski!

My largest holding, fortunately, during these trying times.
These guys are very capital preservation minded, and I can live with that.

I agree!  OAKBX is my BEST performer over the last 15 months of ownership!

Unfortunately, CGMFX is my largest holding & I've taken an enormous beating.

I own OAKBX directly through Oakmark and not thru a brokerage firm or in a retirement account.  I am thinking of redeeming it, to protect against Oakmark going belly up.  Would you do that?  Just curious.  I hate to do it.  These days, it's hard to know what company is going to go under.

LORRAINE:

it is unlikely the oakfunds will go belly up. beside they/you are insured for any improper acts, but remember the market is the guiding force behing the funds. if is up, you gain. if is down you lose. I have just tfred some money to them. hang tight

Yeah, my largest 401K holding is OAKBX. Unfortunately, I am down $45K for the year and that hurts. Not as bad as most but still hurts. I am sitting on a lot of cash (I got out of CGMRX before this crash) and almost itching to put more in rather than take it out. This will be the deciding week, I think. I would love to buy some Goldman if I had the ....well, you know.

Your holdings in OAKBX are fully insured by the SIPC and FINRA regardless of what may happen to Oakmark.

With all the mutual fund redemptions I wonder if OAKBX will have a larger than normal end of year capital gains distribution and dividend?

Why don't you email Clyde or Ed and ask them? They have always answered my questions quickly and honestly. Also, if they weren't comfortable answering my questions they always wrote back and let me know that too.

While disappointing, OAKBX's return compares favorably to Vanguard Balanced Index (VBAIX) return of -24.00 (as of 10/15/08). This fund is still a fabulous portfolio anchor.

I have the American Balanced fund ABALX. I have been looking at OAKBX  to replace ABALX because all the reseach I have done says that OAKBX is better.

In Morningstars moderate allocation catorgory ABALX is recommended as a top pick and OAKBX is not even mentioned.

Anyone have a clue as to why?
