"On Wednesday, The New York Times on the Web flashed a headline that caught my eye: “U.S. to Unveil $1 Billion Aid Package to Repair Georgia.” Wow, I thought. That’s great: $1 billion to fix Georgia’s roads and schools. But as I read on, I quickly realized that I had the wrong Georgia. We’re going to spend $1 billion to fix the Georgia between Russia and Turkey, not the one between South Carolina and Florida. Sorry, but the thought of us spending $1 billion to repair a country whose president, though a democrat, recklessly provoked a war with a brutish Russia, which was itching to bash its neighbor, makes no sense to me. Yes, we should diplomatically squeeze Russia until it withdraws its troops; no one should be invading neighbors. But where are our priorities? How many wars can we fight at once without finishing even one? Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and now Georgia. Which is the priority? Americans are struggling to meet their mortgages, and we’re sending $1 billion to a country whose president behaved irresponsibly, just to poke Vladimir Putin in the eye. Couldn’t we poke Putin with $100 million? And shouldn’t we be fostering a dialogue with Georgia and with Putin?" http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/07/opinion/07friedman.html?ref=todayspaper

http://thehill.com/leading-the-news/obama-backs-bidens-call-for-georgia-aid-2008-08-19.html Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, amid a fury of
speculation about whom he will tap as his running mate, stoked that
fire Tuesday by announcing his support for Sen. Joseph Biden's (D-Del.)
call for $1 billion in aid to Georgia. Obama, speaking to the
Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) national convention in Orlando, Fla.,
responded to his Republican rival's attacks at the same venue and
announced that he is joining Biden in calling for funds for
reconstruction assistance in Georgia following recent Russian
aggression. Mark

The president of Georgia behaved "responsibly" in the sense that he did what McCain's lobbyist buddy asked him to do--make headlines that distract Americans from problems at home and get them thinking about how great the Cold War was. And he behaved responsibly, in the sense that he demanded enough of a payment in return to justify the risk to his country from the escapade. Yes, "we" should be fostering more peaceful relations between countries wherever possible, or at least keep the lid on them when no resolution is possible. BushCo has almost consistently done the opposite because their values are not ours. In a peaceful world, how could they justify the bloated, Treasury-draining military budget that is devastating this country?

No, Georgia should not get any US aid money at all. Let Russia provide it.

"In a peaceful world, how could they justify the bloated, Treasury-draining military budget that is devastating this country?" That's right, Aalan88. This is a fundamental problem that jeopardizes the viability of our country. Only Ralph Nader and Cynthia McKinney are addressing the problem within the presidential campaign, however. The others are just status quo, Dr. Pangloss guys.

While Aide Advised McCain, His Firm Lobbied for Georgia
Campaign Dismisses Timing of Phone Call, Contract By Matthew Mosk and Jeffrey H. Birnbaum Washington Post Staff Writers Wednesday, August 13, 2008; A03
Sen. John McCain's top foreign policy adviser prepped his boss for an April 17 phone call with the president of Georgia and then helped the presumptive Republican presidential nominee prepare a strong statement of support for the fledgling republic. The day of the call, a lobbying firm partly owned by the adviser, Randy Scheunemann, signed a $200,000 contract to continue providing strategic advice to the Georgian government in Washington.

You Liberals are a hoot. Your man Obama endorses your man Biden's call to give $1B to Georgia, and you guys slam Bush and McCain. Two gets you twenty, you didn't know that before I posted it. Don't feel bad, Biden's a foreign policy genius.
