Stockpicker 2008 contestants --READ ME

We need to decide how we're going to handle the 2008 contest. For whatever reason, KoalaBear33 is not following thru. We've tried a DIY type of month-end ranking for 5/2/08 and 5/30/08, but only 7 or 8 out of a total of 39 contestants have bothered to respond. Morale is low and I give up.

What do y'all want to do? I think we have 2 possible choices to consider:

  1. Hang it up for monthly reporting and just report our yearend valuations for cob 12/31/08... or
  2. Start a different contest --One idea would be for us to each choose ONE stock to buy at market open of the 1st trading day of each month and then "sell" it the last trading day of the same month... And then start over again the next month with another stock pick... And so on, repeating the process every month til yearend.

If we go with this, we'll have to start over moneywise --different contest, different rules. TWO possible money rules would be -1- start with $10,000 and roll the profits/losses into successive months and see who wins with the most money on 12/31/08... *or*... -2- just do monthly mini-contests by seeing who picks the best short-term one-hit wonder.

Contestants, please speak up and post your votes here. Do you want to change the contest? If so, what do you want to do? Just report at the end of the year --something I believe that we are all doomed to forget? Or... do we start a different kind of Stockpicker contest for 2008? Or, worst of all, just let it all fade away?

I look forward to hearing from all 38 of the other 2008 contestants.

Regards,
Susan

I vote for starting a new Stockpickers contest.

I think the contest that might generate a lot of interest would be to start with $10,000 and roll the profits/losses into successive months and see who wins with the most money on 12/31/08.

If nothing else, this type of contest will give us more flexibility in a bearmarket trend. The monthly stockpicking will also ensure more active participation. I hope you all agree with me and choose to go with this option.

Susan

Something to factor into your decision: we will be rolling out a portfolio sharing tool in the next 4-5 weeks that will ease participation in these sorts of contests.  This is the super-secret double probation project I referred to a few months back. It would even allow you to do both options above if you prefer.

I'll send more details tomorrow as it is time for this M*-er to go to bed.

Thanks,

Thanks everyone for your patience.  In about a month we will be launching a new tool that allows folks to opt-in to sharing their transaction portfolio(s), which should ease contests as well as help new users ask for suggestions and feedback. Dollar amounts will be hidden to protect privacy, with a focus instead on the holdings, percentages, and total return factoring in buy/sell dates. As part of the portfolio sharing feature, we’ll show different data points like return, style (category), turnover, yield, allocation type, and a Morningstar Rating for Portfolios that works in a similar way to the fund star rating. Users will be able to ask the manager questions via a blog, and will see a breakdown, by percentage, of holdings in an Instant X-Ray.

All shared portfolios will be visible through a listings page that allows you to compare all shared portfolios side-by-side, or just those in a particular group (or contest).  You can also opt to just share your portfolio with certain users as well as hide your star rating if you’d rather not disclose it.

I kept these contests in mind while developing this feature and believe it supports them well.  You can setup a unique contest portfolio in the portfolio tool with all your purchases for a year, or multiple years.  Then you can share it in Discuss and identify that you are part of a particular contest (or contests).  Now when people search for that contest your portfolio will show up alongside all the other participants, creating a single place to see daily updates.  Every change in each user's portfolio will automatically be carried over to Discuss, with data using yesterday’s close.

I’ve included a picture below of what this new interface will look like. This phase one includes a number of data points, a growth of $10k graph, an Instant X-Ray (which is cut off in the bottom image), etc.  If you have a data point in mind that you’d like to see, let me know as we are already working on a list of additional features to include in a later launch.

Thank you for your input!
