I Bond Problem

I purchased $2k worth of I Bonds in April and encouraged a friend to buy some also. I just discovered that she purchased $5k  and listed me as a "Co-owner". She lives in another state and had the bonds sent to her address.

Am concerned that it will be seen as my exceeding the $5k limit/person. I have no intentions of cashing her bonds in the future & feel a "POD" would have been more fitting.

Is there a way to change an I Bond's registration once you've purchased it?

There will be no problem as the limit is based upon 5K per SSN.  Since she used her SSN, and not yours, her purchase will not count towards your 5K limit.

No need to change the registration. Indeed, in the present registration, if you can get your hands on the bonds, you can cash them yourself and run off to Fiji for a nice vacation. :-).
