Hard to beat AWF

Hi All-

Several forum members have mentioned AWF in the past. Jagor and I appear to be on the same page. He said:

At the moment I don't have any pure-REIT funds in my closed-end portfolio since I've been stocking up on non-dollar denominated emerging-market bond CEF's for income and as a hedge against the depreciating dollar.

I think it is obvious that all of us spread money over differnent asset classes. Sounds like REITs deserve serious consideration. And, to mention another asset class,  I have invested - like Dick - in some short term bonds funds...EVV and BLW.

It is also obvious we use different yardsticks in making choices.

In looking for a combination of total return and current yield in an IRA, I think it is hard to beat AWF.

It did well in the last bear market. It is up since the market dropped starting in October 07. It has over $1 million in assets. The total return over five years is 13%. The SD and Beta are low. The yield is 8% give or take. It is selling at a slight discount. It is not highly leveraged. What more can you ask for?

Have a good day.

Ed

Ed,

AWF provides about an 8% taxable distribution. The credit support, as represented by ETF Connect, is substantially BBB or less. At the moment it seems that higher yields are available for higher credit-worthy US corporates. That being said, PIMCO is a very trustworthy  sponsor. It certainly is worth considering.

AWF, an Alliance Bernstein Fund, is helpful in portfolio diversification, giving an exposure to foreign currencies and interest rates.  You might want to check EVV's distribution rate, which I believe was reduced to 12¢ per month last week.  It's probably still a good holding given its exposure to three types of limited duration debt.

I'll beat the drum for AWF.  It's certainly not spectacular, but it has been steady.  With all the volatility of the market all year, calm & peaceful is not too bad!
