I got a apple notebook now. It has OS 10.4 and I am new to this operating system. What is apple Xcode 2? what is its advantages or disadvantages? In general apple are safe from viruses and spywares but what I need to do when I connect this computer to internet using free wireless like in the library or in a cafe? What is VPN PPTP or L2TP? How do I know that someone is not inturding into my computer or tracking my online activity? thanks

VPN is "Virtual Private Network", that is usually what universities and other agencies use to set up a secure private link for those outside their network to log in.  For instance, if you work for a large corporation, or say a University, they likely have their own closed intranet that generally cannot be accessed by the general public.  However, through VPN you can get on their system.  It's one way.  There are others.  Secure tokens are another.  I don't know what PPTP or L2TP are.

Actually, I've been working with Macs a long time, and I'm not familiar with XCode 2, but what I can tell you is that in OS 10.4 you can turn on the Firewall.  Go the the apple pull down menu in the upper left corner and choose System Preferences and click the "Sharing" icon.  When that opens, there is a choice for "Firewall", turn it on.  If you are not using your computer for sharing, turn off sharing and Appletalk.  In fact, under "services" same Sharing menu, turn off everything remotely linked to sharing. That helps.

If you use Safari for browsing, on the Safari pull down menu, there is a choice for "private browsing", use that.

If you use Firefox, there are a number of things you can do.  Under the Firefox pull down menu, chose preferences, then choose privacy.  Turn off  "accept cookies from sites", if you like, but put the web pages that you use frequently and trust, put on  as exceptions so you aren't prompted constantly, then turn on "Always clear private data when I close Firefox".  Also under preferences, chose security, and  turn off remember passwords and master password, turn on "Tell me if suspected web sites are forgeries" and "warn me when trying to install add ons?.

That stuff will help.  It's true there aren't as many viruses and spyware for the Mac, but as the market share increases, and as Steve Jobs continues to piss off the general public, this could all certainly change in the future.   I've seen the evolution of Apple over the years.  Apple is slowly but progressively becoming more like Microsoft, so I think in the end, it will be a wash in terms of safety.  Who knows when, but one of these days.

Thanks  M.ray:

I did make changes according to your suggestions. We have same ID for every one. Lets say can someone sitting next to me, on the same network, snoop into my computer to what website I am visiting with firewall on.  Basically can I make financial transactions using this public library wireless network?

What about cafes which provide free wireless internet to everyone to get people in the stores?

Wow, I'm really uncomfortable making financial transactions over public networks.  But, I'm uncomfortable making financial transactions over my own wireless network.  The risk is probably low, but it's still there.  Most likely, you would be fine, but still makes me uncomfortable.  I really don't know enough about spyware to know whether or not you would be safe.

For myself, I only make financial transactions on my own network at home.  My work network is rock solid, but I still don't do any of that sort of thing there.

A couple of other things I forgot to mention,

In System Preferences, under Security, you can turn on "File Vault" and Set a "Master Password" which automatically encrypts your files such that no one can access your files without the password.  There's one problem, if you forget the password, that's it, there's no saving the data, it's lost.

Also, under the Apple menu, click on About this mac, then more info, scroll down to Software on the left menu, and you will see logs.  There's an installer log.  You can scroll through that to see if there were any unwanted installs on your computer, but you have to be kind of savy to tell whats good and what isn't.

Thanks M.Ray:

Sorry for getting back to you late. I was more referring to checking bank account rather than actually doing any transactions. Any way I will be careful not to do that.

There is new ISP "clearwire" which provide high speed internet via electric wires then you have the option either chose cable modem or wireless modem. Have any one heard about it and how is it? They seem to cheap in my area as their regular rate is about $40 vs $55 for comcast vs various speed plans plus land line for AT&T, which will end up close to $55-60.

Thing about comcast is, their internet speed in my area is very good like 5 - 12 Mb and now I can watch TV via HULU on my computer when ever I want it which works for me very well.
