Scott Burns is a principal in AssetBuilder. He wrote the financial column for the DALLAS MORNING NEWS for 20 or so years and was syndicated throughout the country for most of that time. He's about 60, an MIT grad, and one of the most savvy financial columnists around. Read some of his articles on the website you posted and I think you'll be impressed. He's mainly an indexer, mainly a Vanguarder, and he's the inventor of the Couch Potato portfolio, to which he's now added building blocks of up to about eight more funds. I've been pleased with his Six-Way portfolio which includes VTSMX, VDE, VIPSX, VGTSX, VGSIX and BEGBX. I don't think one can go wrong with Scott Burns.

I am thinking of signing up with AssetBuilder. Their expense is reasonable, 0.45% for $100,000 -$250,000 of asset. The only thing is that there is about $500 of transaction fee at Charles Schwab. Since I wlll be cost averaging every year, so I would have to pay the transaction fee every time I add new money. I am thinking of going with portfolio #14, which is their most aggressive portfolio. It returns about 25% annually for the past 5 years.

Scott B. is very accessible. Why don't you e-mail him for suggestions on how you might get around the transaction fees? It may not be possible, but no harm in asking. (He has always promptly answered my emails).

His email address used to be scott@scottburns.com but that now takes you to the AssetBuilder site. I suggest calling him at 972.535.4040 and asking for his new email address.

BEGBX, American Century International Bond, seems to be closed to new investors.  Is there a suitable substitute mutual fund for this component of the portfolio?   I'd prefer a fund rather than Scott's ETF substitute (BWX).

Well? Let me get this straight..

Your going to invest btwn $100k-$250k and your "concerned" about a $500 transaction fee to buy some 10 funds? that has produces a 25% apy?  Seems to me your being alittle unreasonable.. Even thru Vanguard at a Cost of $35 per fund trade is $350. You think your being just alittle "Penny wise and a Dollar Foolish"? and as for having to pay a transaction fee everytime you want to add new $? I have to also to any of my funds, except maybe if you only use Vanguard funds..then again, look at their rtns..

Also, I surely don't invest into a Fund, let alone a portfolio based upon just it's past 5 yrs..These last 5 yrs have been all Bull market yrs... So? How did it do prior to that? Like during 1998 and 2000-2002? and it's past 8-10 yr apy?

I think your doing what is called a little "'Performance chasing", wihtout doing more Research.. Especially Investing such a larger amount.. Of course if it's a Smaller % of your Total $?  Then it's Not a big deal... so everything is relative..

And isn't he in Texas? Lives Near the Bush ranch?  He's not too far from the Mexican Boarder and can be in Mexico with your $ in a Heartbeat.... and Being a Yankee, I surely don't trust many from Texas myself..LOL
