why was PetroChina (PTR) bought in HK not in the US market?

I was reading an article about Mr. Buffett's purchase of PTR in 2003 - one question came up is why did he bought it in HK stock exchange and not the ADR in the US? they are exactly same performance-wise, what advantage would he get by buying them in HK? foreign currency considerations? Thanks.

Because PTR wasn't listed on the NYSE in 2003. That should have been a real no-brainer. In 2004, only 10 foreign companies had ADRs on that exchange due to the Sarbanes-Oxley act.
