I use PCRDX because I think the DJ-AIG commodities index is the most balanced and I suppose I like the TIPS exposure.

But I complement the commodities index fund with investments in commodities producers (VGENX, VGPMX, VAW, etc) and commodity exporting countries (EWC, EWA, EWZ, EZA, etc).

Over time, these non-index commodities investments have performed very well, and have left PCRDX in the dust. In fact I am now thinking of dumping PCRDX altogether as congenitally defective. The loss due to contango seems to be a serious and "permanent" drag on performance.

Regards

I didn't like the kinds of rturns in those Commodity funds... so I went Direct route instead

of course, I just use part of my High Risk Port for it and not my Core Port $

It's a whole Education in itself

That might not be right for you.

To start your research, I recommend you take a look at Conversation 59973 on the Vanguards Diehard Forum.

Consider the RICI index.

This was created by Jim Rogers (Hot Commodities), and has its own take on commodities investing. It is a pretty painless way to invest, and his index emphasizes agricultural commodities more than most. Just Google RICI index, and his site is the first hit.

I have decided to simply invest in gold and silver, but would drop some money in RICI if I had additional capital to invest.
