". . .just as investors and businesspeople don't believe things could ever go wrong at the peak of a boom, they have difficulty imagining things can get better at the trough of a bust. And so they respond to rising demand not by hiring new enployees, but by coaxing existing employees to work harder. But just as hampsters can run only so fast on their treadmills, there are limits to productivity growth."

Here is a link: People Who Need People

By the way, my English teachers would not have let me begin a sentence with "and" or "but". Is it considered standard now? (or just a bit of journalese)?

Long time no post.

Hope everyone is okay.

Any relative newcomers who don't already know me expecting to learn something about investing should leave now and cut their losses.

TRP portfolio still holding a hard core of PRWCX. A year or so ago our flagship fund was written off like the next Magellan. People gave it up for dead. helmut, Hetty and I held on. Anyone looking at the results since then? Call it a balanced fund, call it a hybrid fund, call it what you will, it's a long time winner.

That's all; I just wanted to defend our flagship fund and say hello.

I miss the good old days when threads would focus on camaraderie at least as much as who was the sharpest knife in the investing drawer.

Full disclosure: I have always been, and will continue to be, a butter knife.

What, exactly, is paperless about this situation?

Like many others, I spazzed out in 2008, buying and selling funds every week. When I was formally banned from performing transactions with TRP funds, I had no idea, because the warning came in the form of a paper letter sent through snail-mail. Between the time they sent that warning letter and the time I received it, the US government offered FDIC insurance for money-market funds, and so I swapped my US Treasury fund for a money-market fund.

That particular transaction pushed me over their limit, and they froze my activity, for a full year. I have been stuck with balances in Global, Capital Appreciation, and Global Real Estate since November of 2008, with no option to buy, sell, or exchange. Is this even legal?

Half of my money in that account is in the brokerage, which I have been free to use. There was one day when I sold everything in the brokerage and paid penalties and transaction fees to do so. Three days later, a snail-mail letter from T. Rowe Price appeared on my porch, instructing me about the virtues of buy and hold.

What the hell business is it of theirs what I do in my brokerage account? They get paid when I transact.

I kind of hate T. Rowe Price now. If you go in and out of a fund at Vanguard, they prevent you from buying that fund again for 60 days. They don't send you a letter in the mail, and they don't freeze your entire account. You just can't buy that fund again for 60 days.

Our financial-asset balance is 13% higher than it was at the market peak in 2007, due to new savings, panic-selling into cash, and short-term trades. I'm tempted to call TRP and try to get them to un-freeze my account through person-to-person reasoning. But I'm even more tempted to move my money out of there in one fell swoop impersonally, via a stack of paper forms sent through snail-mail.

being chastened by last year's market I decided to increase my fixed income
allocation so I opened a position with RPSIX.

After
researching Harry Browne's Permanent Portfolio I have had a paradigm shift concerning
bond funds.

Originally
my strategy was to use fixed income to buffer my portfolio during market
corrections using a bond fund that I thought would cause as little drag on the
equity portion of my portfolio during periods of prosperity as possible.

Last year PRULX had a total return of 23.26%. I had to ask myself, what would it have been liked to have had a 23.26% positive
return from my fixed income allocation last year?

If you're a yield hound then the lower yield of Treasuries
is not going to get you too excited, but the total return for 5 and
ten years is actually better for PRULX.
In and by itself the small difference in the total return would not be a
deal maker for me, but the out performance for PRULX during corrections is.

T. Rowe's Miller Tapped for Treasury Post

Departure of fixed-income head would mean big shoes to fill.

President
Barack Obama intends to nominate T. Rowe Price's director of fixed
income, Mary Miller, as U.S. Treasury assistant secretary for financial
markets, T. Rowe Price said. The appointment requires Senate
confirmation, and there has been no specific timeline disclosed for the
hearings or Miller's departure.

For T. Rowe investors, we see no reason for concern here. T. Rowe
tends to replace senior management positions internally, with the
departing manager working with the incoming one over a transition
period of several months. While the Treasury's timeline may not afford
a generous transition period, we would note that if the successor is
one of the senior portfolio managers, that person may not leave his or
her current management post, as Miller herself retained portfolio
management responsibilities in her role as director.

Whoever it is, he or she will have big shoes to fill.

Of the $315.6 billion in assets T. Rowe had as of June 30, 2009, 28%
were in fixed income securities, and there are 35 fixed-income mutual
funds. Moreover, the director of fixed income plays a key role in
overall investment policy at T. Rowe through a seat on several
management committees, including T. Rowe's influential asset allocation
committee. That committee sets equity and fixed-income weightings for
all the firms' asset allocation products, including T. Rowe's
well-known target-date retirement fund lineups.

In addition, Miller had also continued at the helm of the municipal bond fund, T. Rowe Price Tax-Free Income (PRTAX), up until only last week, officially giving up the reins on Oct. 1
after managing the fund since 1997. A 26-year veteran at the firm,
Miller's most recent fixed-income experience had been focused within
tax-free munis before she was named head of T. Rowe's overall
fixed-income division five years ago. At the time, her elevation
surprised some who expected a candidate from a larger part of the
fixed-income market to be chosen for the director's role. On the other
hand, Miller's reputation as a diplomat scores high within T. Rowe's
teamwork culture.

If the past is any guide, the list of possible successors is wide
open and may include a number of T. Rowe's talented senior portfolio
managers in fixed income. For example, there is Mark Vaselkiv, who
heads the high-yield team and manages T. Rowe Price High Yield (PRHYX), a Fund Analyst Pick, and Ian Kelson, who heads up the global bond team and managesT. Rowe Price International Bond (RPIBX), also an Analyst Pick. Besides Miller, these are the only two within
fixed income who also have a seat within the asset allocation committee.

Meanwhile, it seems Miller is no stranger to politics. Before
joining T. Rowe in 1983, she spent one year as a legislative aide to
Congressman Robert Young in the U.S. House of Representatives. While
she undoubtedly dealt with Treasury officials on occasion in her role,
Robert Gensler, manager ofT. Rowe Price Global (PRGSX) offered his own circuitous connection to the Treasury. His twin
brother, Gary, is now chairman of the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading
Commission, but he was also under secretary of domestic finance at the
Treasury from 1999 to 2001 and from 1997 to 1999, assistant
secretary for financial markets, the position for which Miller has been
nominated.

Introduction & a few questions

Spent the last couple of days reading these forums and decided to stop being a lurker. I recently let my financial advisor go in order to get out of some bad investments and take control over my portfolio. While I do have to question why someone would take advantage of someone in the manner he did, ultimately I can only blame myself for not being involved with my own money.

Before I get into my questions a little background to help you all formulate a better response. I started investing when I was 22 (I'm 31 now). I was on my second enlistment when my wife of one year was in a devastating car accident that left her in a coma. She was just 19 at the time. The Army (Tricare in particular) forced me to choose between getting out or putting her into a nursing home as long term care wasn't covered for spouses. I chose the former and have been taking care of her myself the last 8 years. She doesn't qualify for any in home aid so it's just me. I am fortunate in that I was able to find a job I could do from home. There was so much going on in that first year I decided to let a financial advisor handle all of my investments from the insurance settlement (which wasn't much comparatively).

9 years later and I have exactly what I had when I first started investing (mutual funds). On one hand I guess I'm lucky I gained everything back (I just sat back and held without making any changes during the last couple years). On the other, I feel I could of done a lot better.

I didn't even know what an expense ratio was until a few weeks ago. I was in all SunAmerica funds; Value, Growth, International (70% / 20% / 10%) with expense rations of 2.3%+ Which is what I meant by being taken advantage of. Who does that to someone in my situation?

My wife's uncle is really into investing and recommended I look at TRP. He suggested I go with one of the lifecycle funds and the mid-cap growth. Which is what I did after a few weeks of researching. I was close to going with Vanguard but chose TRP in the end. I put 70% into the 2040 (TRRDX) and 30% into the mid-cap growth (RPMGX). From reading on here it seems most of you steer way from the retirement funds and are a lot more enamored with PRWCX. Which has me second guessing my choice.

I have a small amount (enough to meet most TRP minimums) that I still need to invest. I was looking at something international like the New Asia Fund, although not necessarily that fund. I'm looking for some recommendations.

I have no problem buying and holding and actually prefer that. I have enough faith that in the long run things will come back up. ALL of my investments are for retirement but since I'm still pretty young, I have time and room to invest in some higher risk funds with the prospect of higher gains.

Everyone has been leery of giving me any advice due to my unique situation. Here's the deal though, I'm not going to buy a fund based on any one person's advice. I'm also not going to point fingers should a reccomended fund not work out. I'm smart enough to know nothing is guarenteed and it's my responsibility to do my own DD.

My income is pretty much what it's going to be. Without any help in caring for my wife, I don't have the opportunity to work more, climb the ladder or find a better paying job. I am able to contribute monthly to my IRA (which BTW is the mid-cap growth due to the change of higher capital gains over the 2040 fund) but what I make now is what I can probably expect to make for a long time. Again, ALL of my investment goals are so that I can retire and focus on just caring for my wife. At what age? Well, that all depends on how my investments do. :)

Other investments:

I have a Wells REIT - another bad investment made by my financial advisor. It's gained steadily over the years but as soon as it's cycle is done I plan on moving all of that to my mutual funds. I really have no idea how a REIT works other than my money is locked up for about 10 years and it's in real estate. I can't wait to be free of this thing. The amount in my REIT is roughly equal to what I have in my funds.

I invested money (start up) into the company I work for which pays me 6% per year and 5% of the companies revenue on top of that. It was high risk due to the chance of a new company going out of business but it was an investment in my career and so far has paid off. Once that is paid back it will go into my mutual funds.

I have a full years worth of expenses in a MM account. I know most say a year is overboard but given my situation I feel it's needed. Transferring that to Ally next week to take advantage of their higher rates.

I have some savings bonds that aren't earning anything ATM.

___________

I'd like to cash in those bonds and get them invested in something with very little risk but at least earning something. Someone mentioned some AAAA Corporate Bonds?

Ok this got a lot longer than I expected but hopefully it's better than the "I need help. What fund" pots with no background info.

I'll hold off on my other questions until I see if anyone replies.

Thanks for taking the time to read this and I'm excited to be here and taking hold of my own investments!
