2) Classification isn't the same as "similar"

3) You could accomplish the same thing on a number of screener including the new Beta screener here at M*... But they lack the functionality of bloomberg's ability to switch quickly from CEF, to ETF, to OEF.

I'm told that there is a way to find specific ETFs that are similar to specific funds. What is the method?

gillie12

Who told you that? You want to find an ETF that is similar to an index fund? Then there will be an ETF, maybe more than one that will mirror that same index. But, you want an ETF that is similar to an actively managed fund? That's a fool's errand.

If you find an actively managed fund that diverges from its benchmark, then you will disappointed if try to find an index-based ETF that will perform similar to it. If you find an actively managed mutual fund that looks similar to an index, its an index hugger. Why would consider it in the first place? And for the record, I think investing in mutual funds is a loser's game.

ETFs were designed for tracking a specific sector of the market, with low expenses. You'll best off to ditch mutual funds altogether and appreciate ETFs for what they are, not what they resemble.

Re: Similar ETFs

Gillie12, One way is to visit Bloomberg.com fund section.
There are many ways to skin a cat... My approach is to look at the benchmark index for the fund, then look for ETFs that track that fund. As example, I use FFRHX only due to having read that ticker on the discussion forum today.

FFRHX's benchmark is the Barclay's Capital Aggregate Bond Index. Using the ticker lookup functionality at finance.yahoo.com it was easy to find LAG, a SPDR ETF that tracks the index. I then went to www.spdr.com and used the correlation tracker to identify funds positively and negatively correlated with LAG. I found (as I expected given the index) AGG and BND. The negatively correlated were primarily short funds.

Now, these are not perfect substitutes for FFRHX. FFRHX took a major blow during the panic. The bond index etfs took an initial blow, then rallied back hard. The result, if you look at YTD performance FFHRX is blowing the etf's away. If you look at capital preservation, the etf's blow away FFRHX.

Then too, you do not get exposure to the exact same asset class using these etfs as replacement for FFHRX. But, there aren't any ETFs that I can find that participate in Floating Rate Loans. CEFs but not ETFs.

This is one approach. You might find others that work.

If there is a more direct approach, I do not of it...

Similar ETFs

I'm told that there is a way to find specific ETFs that are similar to specific funds. What is the method?
