So...what is your eventual plan for "investment income" during retirement?  Sell off portions of your capital every year?  If you had bought dividend-paying securities or funds, then "holding" would be paying you an income stream forever.   You are counting on increasing speculative market value on the companies represented in the index.  Why are you not positioning for the income you want?  I do not understand "buy and hold" when you get no income and are only speculating?  Speculating is a risky and dynamic game that even the hedge fund professionals are having trouble making work.
