Thanks for the ideas.  If I understand you correctly, then it sounds like to get diversification (or non-correlation of performance), you would recommend european small caps.  From the advise I have gotten from this site, so far "Vanguard European Stock ETF",  looks like the best option.  You seem to know a lot about investing.
