In calculating some cost basis values for mutual funds, I starting wondering just how useful they were as a monitoring tool. Basically, should I be including shares that are reinvested by the fund company? Sure, I need that for tax reasons, but they seem to confuse my own averages because they're 'sort of' shares that I got for free. So, I'm looking at tracking only the cost basis of the shares I purchased directly.
That led me to tracking the amount directly purchased and comparing that to the value of the fund including all the reinvested shared. That lets me see what I put into a fund and what it's now worth. This could easily lead to more math and hours with spreadsheets.
What do you use to track and compare mutual funds you own to make your own decisions?
