My wife and I have taken a one week road trip to south west Michigan for the last 10 years over the Fourth of July. We are allways able to pick cherries. We usually eat more than we pick. You pay about $3.00 per lb. They are insanely juicy. Some of the best come from Baroda, MI. We than head for Cranes Homemade Pie Store & Restaurant in Fennville ,MI. The place looks like a scene from the 30's. Antiques and Newspaper articles from the 20's and 30's plaster the walls. Now you got to sit down and order a slice of fresh & warm raspberry or rhubarb pie ala mode. This is plain sinfull. Forget the diet. Cranes have been making pies since the 20's. I have not experienced anything like it. This year south west Michigan received a lot of rain and it was cold in May so we picked blueberries. They are so sweet and not tart. If you pick you pay about $1.50 per lb. We usually by about 10 lbs and freeze them on 2 large cookie pans. This way, I can have consistant juicy berries with my breakfast all winter long. We hit the trifecta this year because we were able to also pick strawberries. Usually they are picked over by the 4th. We picked about 8 lbs. in 20 minutes. We stuffed our faces with them because they were so sweet and firm. They were not large, but so good. We payed about $1.50 per lb. The farm we picked was about ten minutes from Lemmon Creek Winery , on Hollywood Rd. Now in between picking we always stop at about three different wine tasting wineries. That is "The High Life". We usually stay at a couple of different cabins that you rent on a little lake. You do not need air condioning. The temperature is usually in the high 70's during the day and in the high 50's at night because of the proximaty of Lake Michigan. Their is always a nice breeze. .It sure was yummy.
