Now you need to decide your investment targets, how agressive you want to be, what % in Intl or global funds, Also, in the qualified accounts, are your choices limited?

For example, I'm very agressive, 74% intl, limited funds in 401K (lousy selection), IRA is the bulk of my qualified $.  I decided what funds based on 'best of breed' via M* rankings in the 1 and 3 yr catagories top 10% based on asset classification.  I spent a weekend doing this the first time.  I basically filled out the M* grid with top 3 funds for each box using domestic funds, then did it for intl.  I went thru each region of the globe, speciality areas I was interested in, etc.. I pick balanced funds, go any where funds, broad based EM funds, Euro based funds.

I then compared the list with my holdings at that time.  I looked for tax friendly funds for the non-qualified side, based on history and M* rating.

When I was done, I sold off some on my tax free side to buy new funds that were not tax friendly. I used the cash on the taxable to buy new funds that were tax friendly.  It took about a week to execute.  I spent a few weeks strategizing before pulling the trigger.

A lot of people will suggest funds, look around the forums for examples.  It will range all over the place.  You need to determine what risk, effort you want to put in for your investments.

My other rule is no more than 10% in any single fund.  So, in some segments I do hold multiple funds, and amazingly when I look at the stock overlap the % is very small.

Another good starting point is the El-Erian portfolio,  do a search in these forums..
