Gregory:Chin, it looks like the equities portion of VG Balanced targets TSM, not the S&P 500.

Hi Gregory,
I use the S&P 500 as it is 99% correlated to TSM and I can compare how it would have done back in 1973 - 1974 and 1929 - 1932. I have asked some of my friends if they could come up with a synthetic TSM using Ibbotson data, but they haven't gotten back to me.
I would like to see how holding the entire market would have come out compared to holding large, mid, and small caps in a fixed ratio that would represent the market. My theory has always been the more diversified portfolio would have done better, as you would have sold growth and bought value, but without actually looking at how it has done, I can't know this for sure.
TSM did better in 2000 - 2002, but it would have done worse 1973 - 1974, and 1929 - 1932.
I have SBBI 2003 somewhere. Maybe if I ever do spring cleaning, I'll find it. ;o),
