I've got $140k in a money market fund in a non-qualified account and $25k sitting idle in my traditional IRA. I've been sitting on the sidelines for the past year, waiting for the market to finish its wringing out. I think the time is getting close.
In addition to these funds, I've got $275k invested in various mutual funds in non-qualified, traditional IRA, Roth IRA and 401k accounts: Vanguard Large Cap Growth, Small Cap Growth, Small Cap Value, Total Bond Market Index, International Growth, International Value, Primecap, and Tax-managed Capital Appreciation. The non-Vanguard funds are Aegis Value and Third Avenue Real Estate.
I'm 47 years old, in good health, and add the max to my 401k each year, with a decent company match. I plan to work into my 60s. This money will not be tapped before retirement.
So what to do with the $165k? I'd like a good, long-term earner in the non-qualified account that won't generate much in the way of current taxable income. For my IRA, I don't care about the mix of income and growth. I'm not looking for miracles in either category (although they're always welcome). I'm willing to tolerate a fair amount of volatility: I haven't sold anything in the past year.
