Thanks, fellas, and anyone else who replies, for your kind and empathetic expressions of condolence snowflake  07-02-2008, 6:41 AM | Post #2534763

I know I'll get through this but it will take some time.

For Tony and anyone else who cares to keep in touch directly by email my web address is:

Flakey@Comcast.net.

Tony, in answer to your query, there will be no wake or funeral as such because only one or two people aside from myself would show up as over the years all our friends have either died or moved away, not to mention that Bob and I gave up the gay social scene (mostly bars, UGH!) years ago and have lived fairly reclusive lives since.  There will be a cremation for sure as that was Bob's wish and a very sensible one at that IMO.  I will not bury or scatter his ashes but keep them in an urn so I'll have that and lots and lots of very fond memories.

For all who'd care to know Bob was very much a member of the Greatest Generation having fought in the Battle of the Bulge and participating in the Army of Occupation in Germany after WWII.  In fact he was an eye witness to the Nuremberg war crimes trials and was actually present in that C-47 transport plane out of which the ashes of the condemned and subsequently executed Nazi war criminals were discarded while overflying the German countryside.  He subsequently made the Army a 28-year career and retired with the rank of Major in the Adjutant Generals Office.

He was a brilliant man but very unassuming and humble in behavior and demeanor; generous to a fault he gave of himself whatever he could to folks who sometimes held him in little regard and even if they had no change coming so to speak.  He achieved the practical equivalent of a doctorate in European history and fine arts while completing the formal requirements for a Masters degree by doing correspondence course work through the auspices of the University of Missouri under contract with the Army for officers who wanted to further their education.  I could go on and on singing (or writing) his praises but I just wanted you to know that he was a very unique and special man even apart from our long term, loving relationship.

Feel free to email me anytime for any reason and thanks again for your support which is most appreciated.

Peace and love even in sorrow,

Flakey
