Re: protecting Honduran youths caught dealing crack cocaine from possible federal deportation and have given some offenders a city-paid flight home with carte blanche to return. closer  06-30-2008, 3:19 PM | Post #2534122

This was a front-page story in yesterday's San Francisco Chronicle. I was appalled to learn that the tax dollars of citizens who reside in the City and County of San Francisco were being used to buy airplane tickets so illegal immigrant Honduran "teenagers," who were charged with local drug offenses, could fly back home. They were even being escorted by juvenile probation officers from San Francisco to the Houston airport to catch their connecting flights. Federal authorities suspect the Hondurans are simply young mules working for narcotraffickers who have learned how to game the permissive system for which Mayor Gavin Newsom is ultimately responsible. (But of course Mayor Newsom is preoccupied with other important matters like banning bottled water from municipal agencies.) Any legislation like the proposed DREAM (Development. Relief and Education for Alien Minors) Act has to be crafted to prevent local officials from skirting the immigration laws and giving criminals "sanctuary" in U.S. cities and a free ride back home.
