Well, I guess it just IAD..It all depends on what one is Able to, Wants to and Has to do.. If one is Able to Do a better job than those Bal. Funds , go for it.. If one Wants to devote all the extra Time, Money and Energy to learn and set up and manage their own stuff? Go For it. and If one HAS to try to earn More than they do, because they don't have enough $ to save to make it? Then They really don't have a choice.. or Live on Less.
But My owning several of them and throw in a Reit and a Equity fund in the Port., like mine is, has only have Ave a 14% apy these past 10 yrs and a 16.8% apy the past 8 yrs . Not the Best, but surely not the worse.. And Owing them during the yrs of 2000-2002? was a Godsend for me...( I almost stayed In A mix of index Funds back in 98/99' , but I went into the Light....LOL )
And my Picks has beaten everykind of Balanced Index Port with the same % mix and even higher equity mixes..I've both seen and tracked..( ave 60/40 Index port about 7.7% apy past 10 yrs ) and i don't mind them being Alittle More 'Tax Ineffcient"....
And being a " Real Lazy Investor" and preferring to Spend my time On my Boat or at the Golf Course..they have more than satisfied my needs and wants and I have no problem paying their extra 1% in fees to do a better job than most everyone else I would have to hire..and pay the same or more fees.
and YTD? after Friday's Bummer? My Port is Down ALOT now... about -0.41 % YTD

And a odd thing... Way back in March when we hit a Bottom of about the same S&P, My Port's $ value was Down alot more back then, than it is this time around.. Back then it was down about $ 7,400 and now only about $2,400.
We'll se what happens come End of Dec. and hopefully everyone will come out all right ..(.Inspite of what they own..) Since it's all just a guessing game anyway.
