Not true. Balanced funds are very different in their mandates. Some are long only and hold treasuries only on the bond side. Others might short, buy converts and high yield bonds. Great example is Permanent, Oakmark and FPA Crescent. One fund is long gold, silver, swiss francs, real estate, etc. Oakmark is simple stocks and high quality bonds and FPA is long and short and owns both bonds and cash. Here are three funds that are balanced but can all be used together. Each is getting a management fee to manage totally different balanced funds.
