Stocks are discounting mechanisms. I am not defending FAIRX specific stocks picks but what you are suggesting is the reason individual investors fail at investing. Stocks today may have already discounted everything that you said about the consumer and the economy. That is all public information and therefore should be fully discounted into the stock. That is what a great manager is paid for: to buy stocks when things feel bad "today" but since the stock has already discounted that, it is now cheap for the recovery "tomorrow". Man, investors will never learn.
