Re: Is there an I&D consensus? ElLobo  06-27-2008, 12:06 PM | Post #2533213

DRIPguy,

"If accurate, then, I'll continue to leave this as a stop on my trail of readings..."

Please do so.  And chip in, whenever we get into any discussion, on any particular subject.  Start your own thread.  Lay down the gauntlet.  Answer JWRs posts, if you disagree.  Answer if you agree.  That's what is supposed to happen on a DISCUSSION forum!

"but, where the wheels fall off is the leap they take next, which is that timing is somehow the answer, to which they seem to fail to find broad support."

Now, the details.  The true indexer/EMH/MPT believes that timing is NOT the answer.  That is, if they should be, say, 60% in equities, then it should make no difference, to their future results, if the market is at a high, or low, P/E.  JWR, as well as a lot of non-index/MPT/EMH believe otherwise.  True, JWR will not find broad support, on DH, and probably not on IDR, but he will around here.

Regardless, this particular forum is NOT some popularity contest.  If people want to discuss something, we are all free to give our opinions, to 'defend' what we believe, to question what others believe, and, in general, we don't tolerate those who flame, without adding to the discussion.  Tolerance isn't quite the correct word.  Maybehaps ignore is better.

I don't waste my time on this forum.  I've been an active poster for over 10 years now.  I'm never 'gonna convince anyone that my 'ultra high yield, extremely risky, junky, yield chasing' withdrawal strategy is better then your crappy MPT based strategy (THAT'S a big 8-)))).  I will explain how it works, and why.  I look for reasons why it could fail.  And I do, evey so often, come away with some nugget of an idea that helps strengthen my portfolio.

If I didn't do so, I have better things to do with my time.

"If JWR was was just another 'one poster among many' (like, say, me - with no website, no 'system' to espouse, no position to try and 'teach' others, no need to be seen as the answer man, no pimping of his partner's finance book), then even mentioning his name in a post starter might seem out of line. But in his attempting to take a position of prominence in an alleged 'new school', and berating the current leaders who are often quoted and sought after today, I just wanted to know if I was in amongst adherents of that 'school', because it is just not one I care to attend."

You are certainly free to contribute to any discussion on this forum.  You are certainly free to start your own topics.  I, personally, can remember several threads, both here and on IDR, that discussed each of the points in your original post.

I guess my point is that I, too, wondered why you started this particular thread.  It was almost like the most difficult exam I ever took in college.  It was an Astronomy class, and the exam was a single question:

"Define the universe.  Give three examples!"

Have fun,

Chuck
