Evaluating Total Return of Dividend Stocks SleepyKat  06-26-2008, 2:00 PM | Post #2532858  |

I am having some trouble finding the silver lining on many dividend paying stocks.  I am a relatively new investor.  I have recently been watching stocks such as KFT, PFE, KO, etc which have been paying dividends over a long period.  All of these stocks are highly rated.  However, I find that these dividend payers seem to be losing market value over time so that their 5 & 10 year trailing total returns are flat or declining.  My understanding is that the trailing total return is computed based upon dividend reinvestment.  Am I missing something here?  What is the motivation to buy these stocks?
