When our military personnel are severely wounded in combat, they usually receive top-flight trauma and acute care. When they're discharged from the active military and enter the VA system, they're discharged with a set of medical discharges codes (DRG & procedural codes).  These codes are basically a snapshot of the vet's medical condition and should serve as a guide and a foundation for their future treatment and rehabilitation.

Unfortunately, these codes are often downgraded upon entering the VA system. Why is this done? By downgrading their codes, the vet is placed on a different treatment/rehabilitation track, tracks which are usually much less costly. As a result, the vet does get "treatment", but often it isn't the treatment they really need.
