It grows practically anywhere even under adverse conditions.  We could grow it on semi-arid land not currently in use for example.  Sugar cane is only about half as efficient and we don't have enough acreage for it with the proper climate anyway.  But Brazil loves it as a source for ethanol and they are energy independent as we speak.
