Help! I'm new to this!

I'm new to this. I'm married, wife and 19 month old kid. I'm at the point where I need to start managing my money better. I've got about 40k in a 401K here and the plan allows us to select mutual funds of our own choice. I've looked at the 1, 3 and 5 year return list hoping that a few funds would show up on all three lists but no luck. What now? Please advise. Thanks!
