Hedge funds that invest in other hedge funds have been available to high-wealth investors for many years, as have mutual funds with fund-of-fund products like Pimco All Asset. More recently, though, we've been seeing allocation funds composed of a mixed bag of assets, including stocks (often long and short), etf index funds, other open-end mutual funds, bonds, and sometimes gold bullion (I can't recall seeing any CEFs). In particular, I am thinking of Leuthold Asset Allocation (LAALX) and Wilmington Multi-Manager Real Asset (WMRIX). I see certain elements in WMRIX that echo the holdings in my mother's Wachovia trust. What do you think of this trend? Do you hold any such funds or do you merely get ideas from them? Are there any that generate decent yield for an income stream?
