If you are looking for a single fund as a complete investment program, a classic balanced fund holding both stocks and bonds will probably fit the bill for you.  Fidelity Balanced, Dodge & Cox Balanced, Vanguard Wellington, and Vanguard Wellesley are all good choices.  I listed them in rough declining order of risk.  That is, Wellesley will give the smoothest ride, but you may miss out on some performance.

If paying taxes is a real bugaboo, then consider Vanguard's Tax-Managed Balanced Fund.  It holds about 50% of its assets in federally tax-free municipal bonds.
