Since you specifically asked about Firstrade...

A couple of years ago I started an ESA account for my kid at Firstrade, and have been pleased.  No annual maintence fees.  No service problems at all.  And both of the no-load funds I was specifically interested in (SLASX JSVAX) are NTF (no transfer fee) at Firstrade.
