Expenses Subtracted from performance?

When I see a comparison of a mutual funds performance versus a benchmark over a 10 yr period, have the expenses of the fund been subtracted from the performance plot? In other words, whenever a funds performance is compared to a benchmark, have the expenses been subtracted from the results?
