Francis, I have two likely solutions and one wild-guess idea for you...
Call or email the New York Public Library at http://www.nypl.org or, if using their email request form at http://www.nypl.org/research/eref/eref.cfm (mark Business & Finance as the subject area).
Call or email AT&T Investor Relations at http://www.att.com/gen/investor-relations?pid=5644, for cost basis at http://www.att.com/gen/investor-relations?pid=5674 or (copied from AT&T's website investor relations page)
If you have other questions, you may contact one of the managers listed below or submit a comment or question online.

Is it possible that Southwestern Bell used to be called (or changed its name TO) Southern New England Telecommunications? Your Southwestern Bell is the only one NOT mentioned in the cost basis guide at http://www.att.com/gen/investor-relations?pid=5674
One other last-ditch suggestion, Francis... Call the transfer agent for the shares. I am, of course, assuming that you're holding the actual share certificates. If not, call Fidelity and make their customer service FIND the 800 #s for the transfer agents.
I hope this helps, Francis.
Regards,
Susan
