Here are some real-life funds that would answer your question.

American Funds:

Investment Company of America started        Jan 1, 1934
American Mutual Fund started            Feb 21, 1950
AMCAP started                May 1, 1967
Washing Mutual Investors Fund started         July 31, 1952
Income Fund of America started        Dec 1, 1973
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
 

Their performance can be tracked -- even counting regular withdrawals from that time (or any time since).

I like to look at rolling 25- or 30-year periods starting at 1934 to year-end 2007.

This doesn't guarantee anything for the future, of course, but it does generate a little confidence. A lot of crazy things have happened in the world since 1934.
