It would never work today. In 1954, illegal immigrants were concentrated in the farm belts of the Southwest, that is sure not the case today. I think it is time to incorporate those already here into being American, and start looking at the big picture. Maybe we need, along with increased border security, a Constitutional amendment that deals with anchor babies, and maybe we need to rethink free trade agreements that destroy the livelihoods of the poor in other countries. We are all for free trade, but why are no politicians mentioning that most of the benefits of NAFTA in Mexico ended up in the hands of a few wealthy families.
Ya know, one thing Bush was critised on by both parties in his State of the Union address, was that some money used for American food aid be spent in those countries that need the aid, instead of flooding the local markets with free American food and driving all the local farmers out of business. People are just not willing to connect the dots that feed into the illegal immigration debate.
