I believe the Vanguard ETF is a excellent sector play, but I chose a different route. I purchased individual shares. REITS are about location, like any other real estate investment. My favorite REIT is WRE - Washington Real Estate. It has moved up from the bottom last week, but look it was about 1/3rd off high and all it's properties are in and surround the Washington, DC.  I also purchased a smaller allocation to AIV which is one of the largest apartment REIT's in the US. It has moved substantially but was far off its highs. I also bought Plum Creek Lumber, which is a lumber play and rural real estate play, but that one is up some from bottom but I think in near term has more risk given downturn in construction. I also have owned a pink sheet stock BWEL, but note that one does not pay a large dividend and is not a REIT, but owns substantial real estate in California and Australia - very interesting stock as a "forever hold". Traded thinly, so put in limit order. I plan to balance out the allocation with the Vanguard ETF, with a total real estate position of about 5% of total portfolio. I have mine in a brokerage IRA which appears to be very efficient. Bigfoot   Topics brokerage IRAs limit order Plum Creek Vanguard ETF View Complete Thread
