Hate to say it, but what a lousy employer.

For me (my husband's employer has John Hancock. Another not so good choice), we selected a fixed income fund because it had the lowest fees and we allocate around that with our IRA's. It makes sense for us because we need the reduction in taxes that a pre-tax 401k contribution provides. If you don't need to reduce your taxes, then I say stay out of your 401k. The way we do it is just increase the payroll withholding via W-4 (we use 20) so that you get more $$ back during the year and just contribute to the 401k.
