At 42"-50", you may find that plasma TVs have lower price points than LCDs. So you may want to look at the differences between the two set types.

You will find that DLP sets at that size range are cheaper still, but they have replacement bulb costs every few years that hits there cost efficiency.

The contrast ratio (difference between deepest black and brightest white) is a parameter given much play by the manufacturers and retailers. But because manufacturers measure it differently, you can't put too much faith in the actual number, except perhaps on an order-of-magnitude basis.

The number of HDMI inputs may or may not make difference, but some have one and others have two.

Decide if you want to pay a premium for 1080p vs. 720p resolution. There is a big difference in quality, but unless you are using a HD or Blu-ray DVD, you won't see that difference because very few stations broadcast in 1080. That may change in a few years, so you have to decide if you want to buy for the future or buy for now.

I personally like what Samsung is doing with flat-screens and consider them to be one of the better manufacturers. In addition to Samsung, I haven't seen a Sony I didn't like.

There are some very good buyer's guides out on the Net - of course, there are some bad ones too.

Hope this helps.
