Also, are there Vonage or third-party VoIP phones that operate over wi-fi, other than the new cell phones with wi-fi capability?
Typically you have a couple of different ways to connect Vonage. If you already have a home network with a router, including wireless routers, you simply plug in a TA (telephone adaptor) into one of the ports on your router. Then, you can plug in the base station of a telephone system into the TA, and then the base station and associated portable handsets have service.
If you don't have a router, some of the Vonage equipment includes a router with a built in TA, which may is used for both your home PC network and VoIP service. The router will provide the separate, necessary IP addresses to route internet traffic to either your PC, or your VoIP setup.
Go to the nearest Best Buy/Circuit City, or look on Vonage's website for specifics.
I have a wireless router provided by Verizon for my PC network, and a TA Adaptor purchased at Best Buy for the Vonage setup. All I had to do was tell Vonage what my MAC address of my TA was, for them to associate the telephone number to my equipment.
Very easy setup.
