Give it more time and adjust. It might be a mental hang up. Think more about the total sleeping conditions, than just one element, such as the mattress. I have the capability to sleep any where, any time, given proper settings. Forgive me if I am repeating myself; I did not review past posts. The proper conditions are a cool room, darkness, no sound, light covers, soft pillow. Being able to lay a leg next to my loved one of 51 years is a calming thought.
Our mattress at home must be 20 years old. The one in the new RV is slightly softer. I could sleep on the floor if the conditions were right. The worst mattress I have found was a water bed, but that was 20 years ago.
IMHO, the importance of the mattress is over stated. Rossby

I posted above in #76. I have been sleeping on the new Sealy Springfree (latex) for four nights. My aching back has gradually gotten better every day. I really love this new mattress!

My wife and I are looking for a queen size mattress. I noted alot of recs for Sealy's Springfree line. Have some questions:
- we live around Chicago. Where can we go to get the best deal on price? Any experiences with The Beddding Experts? Should we explore on-line shopping? If so,with who?
- For other brands (Serta or Simmons etc..), would love to get opinions on their latex offerings and prices.
Thanks, Jackbox

Why One Latex Mattress Per Store?

Went shopping the other day, dead set on buying a latex foam mattress based on recomendations here. At "Factory Mattress Co." they had 4 long rows of various make mattresses, including Sealy, Sterns and Foster, I believe Simmons, and probably others. However, when I asked to see a latex mattress, I was told they have 1 Sealy Reflexions "Venice Beach". At "The Original Factory Mattress Co" it was about the same; store full of box spring mattresses, and only 1 latex foam mattress. At "America's Mattress Co." (they sell only Serta) they too only had 1 latex to sell. With all of the glowing reports on this long thread, and apparantly general praise and acceptance of latex mattresses, why is this and what am I missing?
Bob, where ever you are, would you please address this for me and tell me why the mattress stores apparantly don't want to sell latex mattresses? Thanks
Mike U.

The Chicago area is not known to me. I would try the manufacturers websites to locate stores near your zip code. Once done, I would call those stores and ask questions regarding their latex selections on the floor. This will save you time and aggravation.
I'm familiar with the new Simmons Latex line and think it's a big improvement over their old latex line. The only caution I have is it seems expensive compared to Sealy's Spring Free. I cannot explain why there's a difference in price. This price difference may be in the Northeast area only. Nonetheless, it's worth a look.
I think Serta's latex line is the least desireable of all the "S" brands. But don't take my opinion for Gospel. Try them all if necessary but keep in mind the overall percent of latex listed on the white law label is critical to your decision. A good latex mattress will have at least 85% or higher in total latex content when compared to all the ingredients of the entire mattress.

Frustrating, isn't it?
Any retailer that features only 1 latex selection is missing the boat and probably not worth your money. Ask yourself this, how serious are they about this category?
My advice to Jackbox to search the mfr's websites to locate retailers and calling them first applies here as well.
Retailers are owned and operated by people. Some get it. Some don't. Let your fingers do the walking and find a retailer who "gets it".
It will be worth your effort as many who have posted here can attest. While the process of shopping for and selecting a mattress can be frought with obstacles and difficulties, the rewards of finding the right one outweigh the negatives. Good luck and let me know if there is more I can do to help.

Bob,
Thank you for your response and all your previous responses. I reviewed all your bits of information and they were very helpful.
This past weekend, my wife and I checked out mattresses at American Mattress (Serta), Bloomingdales (Sealy, S&F,Shifmans and some other real expensive brands) and Bedding Experts (Sealy and S&F).
We were long overdue for a new mattress as our present one is about 18 yrs old. Almost every mattress felt great except the real firm ones.
My wife wanted something real plush (soft) and I was lokking for a tweener. The long and short is we ended up with a S&F Downing Street model (queeen size)from Bedding Experts. This model is from their Boulevard collection (whatever that means). It's a pillowtop and it felt great. It is not latex. It will be delivered on Thursday so we'll see once we get some nights of sleep on it. It cost $1,799.
There were not many latex models to test out. There was one at Bloomies (S&F Tropical Oasis) that we liked but it was out of our price range.

Bob, The Bogleheads directed me to this discussion and I'm so glad they did! Your posts are wonderfuly helpful. I live in Northern Virginia (which is also near Maryland and DC). My husband and I are looking for a new mattress. We find our Temperpedic mattress to be hot to sleep on, and we don't want to go through another spring/summer with it. We like the idea of latex but we're afraid it too might be too warm too, though I haven't seen any of the posts on this conversation say that latex is hot. Can you tell me what you think of latex with respect to how hot it is to sleep on. If a latex mattress is just a little bit warmer than a regular spring mattress, but not much warmer to sleep on, that would be fine with us. So if that's the case, can you suggest some current latex mattresses that you think we might like to check out. Also, I just read that JC Penny's is introducing a new line of latex mattreses -- Simmons Natural Care mattresses -- which will be out in a few weeks. Do you know anything about these mattresses? Thanks! Elaine

I use a pad of memory foam mattress about 2 inches deep over a silicone pad matress one inch thick intended for hospital patients to avoid bedsores. Both on top of a regular spring mattress. I use them due to a bad back. The memory foam is a knockoff of the expensive Tempurpedic you see advertised on TV. It's worked out very well for me. --------------------------------- I'd like to start a new post but I don't see how. Where is that button? Thanks.

Elaine, All Memory Foam mattresses "sleep hot". Tempur-Pedic falls into this category. Latex mattresses do not sleep hot or cold. Regarding temperature, they are more similar to traditional innerspring mattresses. Latex mattresses will feel different than your current Tempur-Pedic. They have more bounce to them but they still minimize side-to-side motion disturbance. When selecting a latex mattress, be sure you check the total latex content listed on the Law-Label of the mattress. Latex contents of 85% or more are what you are looking for. There are many imitators, so check the Law-Label. Simmons Natural Care Latex line is a god choice. They use cores produced by Latex International produced domestically (in the US). They are a blend of 65% synthetic latex and 35% natural latex (from rubber trees). The quality is very good and Simmons has recently increased their latex assortment yielding more comfort choices. Simmons Natural Care latex is available at many retailers, not just JC Penney. To find one, visit www.simmons.com and use their dealer locator feature based on your zip code. Good luck. Bob

Bob, Thank you for your answers to my questions!!! I am happy to know that a latex mattress doesn't "sleep hot." Then a latex mattress is what we want. I'll check out the link you provided for Simmons. And two more questions... Given that it's been a while since you posted some of your earlier thoughts on mattresses (a few years even), I'm wondering what you think of the latex mattresses referred to in the earlier posts -- specifically the Nature's Rest and Sealy lines. Are they still considered good quality lines? Before I thought of writing to this board to ask for info about mattresses, my husband and I went to Bloomingdales and spoke with a salesperson. He steered us to the Stearns and Foster Tropical Oasis Pillow Top mattress which has latex under a pillow top with memory foam in the pillow top (as I recall). We thought that that mattress might not be a good idea for us because it has a layer -- even if just a relatively thin layer -- of memory foam, which we already know makes us sleep hot. Also I'm wondering if it would be best for us to buy a mattress without a pillow top. After all, we can always put a mattress pad over the mattress to achieve something similar and then when it gets matted down and no longer useful we can replace it. What are your thoughts on pillow tops for latex mattresses? Thanks again! Elaine
