Time flies, guys. It is approaching yearend and it is time to enroll for the *2008* MF Contest. As discussed previously, I am passing the baton to SageNolos. He has graciously agreed to take over as administrator/head honcho. For however long he needs me, I will help him post the ranks. (That won't take long, will it?! After all, SAGE has been helping me a lot this year --something I am forever grateful for.) If you'd like to participate in our 2008 MF contest, SageNolos has quite generously agreed to give y'all from now and until 12 midnight EST, Sunday, December 30th. However, don't wait too long to enroll... Sage's program has its limits and he can allow a maximum of 100 participants OR a max of about 270 unique picks, whichever comes first.
The MF contest invests $50,000 equally among your five (5) OEF, ETF and/or CEF picks. All distributions will be reinvested prior to each ranking throughout the year. Sage did not say, but I assume that he will be using the same benchmarks as those for 2007... FFNOX, VTSMX, S&P500 and EAFE. Please post only ONE time here. Simultaneously enroll and specify your 5 fund picks.
Each of your 5 picks must be an OEF, ETF or CEF. No individual stocks or REITs, Trusts, etc, allowed.
Your 5 picks must be different funds, no doubling or tripling-up by choosing A, B, C or other same-fund share classes.
Your funds cannot be from the pinksheets. IOW, they must have some sort of consistent daily volume of trade.
If you prefer to overweight a particular sector, asset or style, use other funds from among their peers. For example, mldeerslayer is a goldbug, a trueblue bear and/or both. His 5 picks every year are all gold/precious metal funds... BGEIX, GOLDX, TGLDX, USERX and USAGX. Good luck, everyone!
Regards, Susan P.S. If the MF enrollment post drops from the front "page" Sage or I will simply bump it up.

kevindow: I would like to propose a change in the rules which would exclude leveraged ultra-bull funds
I would like to second kevindow's proposal. If it is too late for 2008, then at least for 2009. Picking bets for this contest has two aspects to it - Betting on an asset class/sector/region
- Betting on an investment philosophy/style, manager's stockpicking skills ...
In a world where fear is not a factor, risk nonexistent, alpha meaningless, and high beta not a deterrent, leveraged funds are the obvious choice. This takes step (2) out of the equation. For example, if your bet in step (1) is Emerging Markets, you are practically forced to pick UUPIX, DXELX, UBPIX, and DXZLX. I would have bet AEMGX would outperform ADRE/EEM, but obviously would not pick it ahead of UUPIX/DXELX in a virtual-money contest. I would like to withdraw my entry from the contest. Thanks.

Hi Susan, It will be interesting if we pick only what we own. That will make it a real contest. I picked the best five of my portfolio and I want to see how good my decisions are as compared to the fellow investers. Just a thought ..................thanks

rascfw: Please post only ONE time here.
Please don't make changes to your picks. I don't think we can start allowing changes - the potential for unending changes is too great! Your broker wouldn't allow you to change your mind once you submit your order, without (serious) consequences. People will always find better choices in someone else's picks. Or new news comes out revealing a fatal flaw in a pick, like the current INP situation. What if we had a crash before the limits were reached, then everyone's perspective would change. Please discuss proposed rule changes here: Conversation #2463358.
