What your dog says about you.

I had two beagles, Blue and Yellow (both were half-breeds and Blue was the best rabbit dog I've ever owned). Bush has Barney the Scottish Terrier, his dad had Millie the Springer Spaniel. Clinton had Buddy the Lab, Ford had Liberty the Golden Retriever, LBJ had Him and Her, beagles he used to lift off the ground by the ears. JFK had a pet shop full of pets, while Carter had Grits a mongrel of some sort. And Ike had Heidi the Weimaraner.

Ben Stein has two Short Haired German Pointers, named Plato and Brigitte. Which proves he's an intellectual chauvinist.

I suspect if Obama has a dog it's name is Enigma the French Poodle.

Ted:No,I never judged (not where it would count).

We were general vendors at conformantion dog shows for close to 15 years.Great time, money good too, just too much of a physical toll on our bodies.Setting up a 20x30 tent and emptying a 24' box truck into it every weekend (sometimes at two locations per weekend) is a young persons job today.

I did have many good conversations with both judges and exhibitors through the years and got to know many of them well. Even today though,I still contend that 90% of people should not own dogs. When the only tiime a dog is treated well is if it wins in the ring,is wrong by me.

Breeding and exhibiting should be done for the betterment of the breed.....not the pocketbook. There are professional dog handlers around that make as much as 70k per year for handling just one dog.few handlers work just one though.

Over the years I've been witness to many occasions of dogs getting beaten by handlers and owners alike if they did not perform up to expectation. How can folks that do that come back and say how much they love dogs? The  sport has turned into a big money game. The only greedy bas***ds on the grounds should be the vendors that pay high fees to rent a spot.It was not uncommon for my booth fee to be over 2K for many indoor shows.

EagleTed:
Actually, Hetty, I'm as boring as I appear. Yellow had a yellow color, the breeder just about gave him to me, apparently, there was an illicit love affair going on. He was half beagle, but it wasn't enough to overcome whatever stock he came from. No nose at all.

Ted,anyone who can come up with "Enigma the French Poodle" is far from boring.

;)

Not having a dog is great also. No hair all over everything, no barking, no vet bills, no dog food, no boarding when on vacation(wish the campers that took dogs along understood that most are there to get away from noise).

tar,

Yes, there are expenses and inconveniences associated with owning a dog, but there is one benefit which clearly outweighs these cons. Owning a dog is often cheaper and more effective than visiting a therapist.:) Some of the most emotionally trying times in my life have been made much more bearable by owning a dog.

People who have worked in the healthcare field are well aware of the positive effects which pets can have on the sick and the dying. I've been in various hospitals and nursing homes where animals play an integral part in the daily care and treatment of patients.

sensei, if pet are cared for and the owners are responsible I would agree. Too often though, the animals are not care for properly and the dog is allowed to bark for hours on end while the owners are away for the day. I walk the trails near my home and find that the owners allow they dogs to run without a leash, the owners couldn't care less about picking up the droppings, or whether their dogs disrupts others out for a walk or jog. Half the owers that I have contact with should be allowed to own a dog.
