Rice - (or lack of)

We go to the base commisary once a month for our "big" shopping - fill up the freezer & stock up on cat/dog food & diet pepsi for the Bacardi.  Today the rice shelf was empty of the 20 lb bags we buy (wife is oriental).  I bet there is no rice shortage in this country, but people are stocking up & buying an extra bag or two just in case because of the stories you hear on the news every day.      Bullwinkle

Tony, I also heard on the news about a month back that some were buying rice to send to their families overseas.

Now, you'd wonder, wouldn't the shipping costs be outrageous...maybe sending money would be better?  But money doesn't do much good if there's nothing to buy, so perhaps in some parts of the world, rice is indeed the coin of the realm these days?

BTW I use brown rice.  Plenty available, so far.

Hetty - plan B ---  NOODLES.  I haven't had a piece of bread in years.  What are you going to do when there is a (gasp) - coffee bean shortage??!!        Tony

We're coming into the wedding season now, and rice-challenged wedding parties are looking for an alternative to hurl at the newly wedded couples.

Potatoes are the obvious choice.

I haven't been to a wedding where rice was thrown in ages. Everyone around here uses birdseed.

Taters, eh? That would smart, unless they were mashed taters.

Rick-

When i got married 3 years ago, the church explained that they (and just about every other) no longer allow rice to be thrown outside due to the environment issues with the local pigeons and other birds.

Our church didnt allow birdseed either due to the mess that birds usually left behind afterwards.  We had rose pedals thrown at us.

Our local Publix has just put pallets of rice out to counter the shortage issue.

I had to look that one up.  From the name, i thought Publix might be one of those storage places - where you can rent some space to store your extra junk.  Had never heard of a supermarket chain called Publix before.
