has the stock market ever gained during a recession?

hello
i was wondering if anyone can recall back to recessions or other recession-like times if the stock market ever did well? or, in the alternative, what types of funds other than gas, commodities, gold, might be good performers? i don't have any specialty funds other than the fsnex and global natural resources (ticker psfax?) and i would be way too late for the gold rush, so to speak. but i'm sure it's possible to have one's portfolio in the positive during these times, i just haven't figured it out.
than ks,

The stock market is a leading indicator, so yeah, it often rises before a recession ends, and falls before a recession starts.
Traditionally, defensive stocks do well, such as utilities. Don't know that is or will be true this go around.

If someone didn't like what I posted, at least have the guts to post why.

LOL I went from one negative to three on my second post. Hopefully this one will break some kind of record.
We've got some chicken ***** on this board who aren't brave enough to post their thoughts and would rather do the hit and run thing.
Well, chumps, what are you scared of?
Look in a mirror, have you ever done one brave thing in your entire worthless life?

Yes, they need to head on over to the Diehards' board where they can passively invest and leave their heads in the sand.

I don't think you can lump recessions together like that. There are different reasons for each recession so what sectors will do well in a particular recession are specific to that recession.

You might be right. I just don't get it. You know, if I don't agree with something I'm going to say why. It's not even that brave a thing to do.
Maybe it's a generational thing. Or, just a poor (bad) upbringing.

Probably some of each. It's gutter-sniping at its best.
Regardless, +1 for you and KCallie. :^)
