On June 30, 2006, in conversation 51574, I made a "bet" with wagnerjb in which he took an index fund -- ishares Russell 100 (IWD), and I took an actively managed fund -- Windsor II (VWNFX).
Since then, Windsor II has returned 20.58%, and the index ETF has returned 17.31% Thus, the actively managed fund returned 3.27% more.
Note that if you included brokerage fees, Windsor II's lead would increase.
I will update you all on the status of the bet periodically. There is a long way to go!

Name Change?
Did we go from non-Diehard to anti-Boglehead?
What's wrong - you afraid of offending the Bobbleheads?
Why don't you change it to the Anti-Pasta Blog?
Oh wait...., that would probably offend the Italians.
You can't say "Boo" in this country anymore, without offending someone. Hell, even that would probably offend the Ghosts!:^)

A little more on Short-Term performances:
I subscribe to the "Morningstar FundInvestor". Inside it the Morningstar 500 tracks 40 different Large Value funds. Regarding the 1-Year numbers as of Aug. 31, 2007, only 9 are underperforming the Russell 1000 Value Index. (I'm sure that index is not the pre-determined benchmark for each of those 40 funds.) The range of those 40 funds' 1-Year returns are 6.4% for Muhlenkamp, MUHLX, to 25.1% for Vanguard Capital Value, VCVLX. The R1000Value clocks in at 13.5%. Windsor II returned 16.0%. All numbers are as of 31 Aug.
