and have some silly/serious fun.

$100,000, tax-free, drops from the sky with a ceremonious THUD on your desk.

You must do something within 48 hours of receipt with the money.  But only one choice can be made from this menu or the $100,000 will vaporize.

Would you:

1) Buy stock?  Which ones?

2) Put it in  mutual funds?  Names?

3) Invest in real estate?  Where?

4) Park it in a money market fund?

5) Spend it without a backward look?   BTW, anyone who thinks you cannot spend $100,000 in 48 hours has never visited Rodeo Drive.

Have fun with this one!

;)

Well, jah, milan, many gubmint programs DO seem to operate that way.  Problem is, the money never seems to land on top of anyone you or I know!

I remember seeing an old screwbally comedy once, may have been Barbara Stanwyck in the lead?  She's a Depression-era working woman walking down the street, minding her own business.  A spoiled heiress tosses her mink from her apartment window and it lands on our heroine.

Now that's a program that the even NRA or the War or Poverty would have been unable to top!

The next $100,000?  See that little piggie waving as it wings past your window?

Thanks for playing.  We have a lovely cup of strong kava to take with you.  Don't let your little patients taste it though or you'll have an office full of wired tots!

Looks as if you, Alex and I will be now be practicing a strange form of oneupmanship, er, downmanship.

Half in savings for a house, half for my future child's education.  That is the boring answer.

A big spending spree would make me uncomfortable.

I think I would take out all the money, counted off as 10 bricks of $10,000 each.  Then I would fly to the poor families that lost loved ones from that recent mining disaster, and hand each of them a brick.  No comment, no fanfare, just hand it to them and say God Bless.  I think that would feel pretty good.

It is actually laughable to me, that someone could vote my blog down when I have all of three posts.  Was it too much for them to read?  Maybe they got lost in all the detail?  lol... I think some people are just so odd.  Oh well, I have decided I am fine with it.  Hey everybody!  Vote me down to the ground baby!

Alex, I wonder if anyone's actually voting at all?  Or gremlins are in the system?

Then again I seem to be holding firm at zero or less than zero.  A less secure individual would take it personally.  I shan't.  ;)

And just what do the low scores mean?  Are there consequences? We get banished from M*?  Tsk, tsk, that's life.

In the meantime, drink up and grin.  What is your beverage of choice tonight, sir?  Fall is almost here; even in Southern Cali there's a slight chilly nip in the air.  Much to see and to do in the world....the real one.   Blogs? Just a small diversion in a busy day.

Sandy, welcome to the Cyber Cafe!  I kept the neon sign burning so you'd find your way in the M* fog with ease.

Smart woman you are.  Preserve the money in a high interest bearing account and bide your own sweet time.  The market's been an extreme roller coaster, almost like the ones at Magic Mountain.  While they're fun to ride, it's also a good feeling when the adventure tapers off a bit..

The housing market's insane.  Even the supermarket gives ya sticker shock LOL.

Regular or decaff this morning, or are you a tea drinker?   (BTW I own stock in SBUX and PEET so I'm making sure I'm covered on every street corner and mall in existence.  Sip away, friend!)

hmmm,

5000 ---> to my parents for them to have during rainy day. They are retired and even though they dont need it, still would feel good for me.

5000 ---> for my brother just as a gift.

5000 -----> for my fiancee because if she found out that i gave to my family and none to her , maybe NO MORE _______ (fill in the blanks heheheh)

rest of 85000 ....put it all on RED :)...just kidding!!

40000 to put towards paying almost off my condo.

10000 in S&P 500 index mutual fund, dollar cost averaging over a year.

rest 35000......keep it as emergency cash balance and NEVER touch it. so any savings that i have from ongoing salary goes towards investing for the future.

You are in my locality.  Do you ever go to Nordstrom Rack in the Howard Hughes Center?  I buy a lot of shoes there, and just love the place for shoes.  I have heard its also a fantastic place for women's shoes.  Is this place very good?  My wife longs to own many pairs of Cole-Haans, and I am just a poor bean counter...

Sir Dry, and where' s Queenie's slice of this pie?  ;)

May I commend you for your thoughtfulness toward your parents?  Even if they don't need the money,  I agree with the school of thought that believes that on some level, we always owe a debt of gratitude to our parents for what they did for us or, even if they weren't fairy tale parents, what they tried to do for us.  Good for you, dear Dry.

A sisterly smooch to you so your fiancee won't suspect anything....just kidding!!!!!!!

Alex, I've been to Nordstrom Rack several times but not recently.  Hmmmm, time for a visit?

*whistling for Corolla to appear*

Your beans will go much farther there than at the real Nordstom (except for when N., has its half-yearly cooool sales).

I'd suggest your wife should check there periodically and make friends with a sales associate who may call or email her if something juicy appears.  The only problem I've found with the Rack is that often they  have a great find which is only left in one size.  But if it's her size, EUREKA!

Alex, no need to apologize!  No such thing as off topic in my blog.   I am a benevolent despotess.  More or less...:)

Queenie's CyberCafe's mandate:  to provide a congenial spot for denizens of the M* fora to drop in and sip the booze, er, beverage of their choices, while yapping about anything:   politics, stock picks, tightwad tips, off topic gossip, and ESPECIALLY the high price of suitable shoes.

The topics I plan to introduce are simply to get the conversational ball rolling.  As in the real world, people will jump from topic to topic, toss in asides, make wisecracks, ask directions.....

As for shoe sizes, 9B is the best selling woman's size in Cali (I have a head full of birdseed).  Size 7?  She may do very well at the Rack.  Onward and chargggggge it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

She is Japanese, and is terrified about coming here to live.  So I am obsessing about stupid things like getting her shoes.  Oh well, any attempt to get her settled in has to help a little.

Have you ever been to Japan?  Asia?  Its a very exciting place to visit...

Man!  This new format is like the meteor that killed all the dinosaurs.  Just us mice left (Squeak Squeak).

Alex, she has you as a husband, that's a good start in any new country.  In the meantime, I shall alert the staff at Nordstrom Rack and other shopping meccas in our general 'hoods that if a lovely young Japanese woman comes in and says, "Kore wa ikura desu ka?" and/or "Kore ni shimasu,"  they should hang up their calls to the boyfriends and their mums and help her find the shoes of her dreams.

It's quiet 'round here.  Too quiet.  To turn around T. S. Eliot, "This is how the world ends, not with a whimper but with a BANG."

so quiet you can hear a mouse whizzing on a newspaper...

More coffee anyone?

I found a little article in a magazine which referenced the original at petshed.com.  I don't know how to do links anymore, so I will just outright plagiarize it.

Nursing Homes for Dogs

"Tochigi, Japan:  Local dog owners have taken their obsession with their pets to new heights - with the opening of the very first canine nursing home.

Yahoo reports that the Soladi Care Home for Pets has an assisted living program which provides 24/7 monitoring by trained doctors and vets.

A fully operational and well staffed facility, the canine nursing home will house up to 20 dogs at any given time - and with weeks to go until opening, they already have clients lining up. Yahoo reports that pet owners will be charged 96,000 yen or about $800.00 per month.

So what exactly does your $800.00 get for your aging pooch?  Quite a lot really.  Associated Content reports that dogs checked in at the Soladi Care Home have round-the-clock doctor visits and check-ups, as well as customized exercise and physical therapy programs. For dogs with special requirements(say in the case of diabetes or incontinence), in-house vets are standing by, ready to be at their side at a moment's notice.

Specially formulated diets have also been developed.  And for some really clever canine therapy, they employ a frisky group of rescued puppies for the older dogs to play with, helping them feel better, younger, and more fit."

My question is:  Can I sign up myself?;^)

Welcome back, Princess Twinlabs!

Parking it in the MM for now, as Sandy advocated too, seems like the choice I'd make.  Several years back, I would have said "plunk it down on property" or "head for the market (stock, not Albertson's)."

Today, I'd find the highest yielding fund I could and sit tight.  And wait.  Opportunities to buy will be there when this all shakes out.

In the meantime, to steal from Peggy Lee, let's break out the booze, er, coffee and have a ball if that's all there is....
